The rain is fine, it's the roof and the tank that aren't
Rainwater is clean when it lands. The trouble is what it picks up crossing a roof and gutters: dust, leaf litter, bird and possum droppings and moss. The first few minutes of a downpour carry the worst of it.
Inside the tank that becomes sludge on the base and sometimes a smell when you fill a bucket. Water comes out tea coloured or gritty, the pump short cycles, and perished inlet screens let mosquitoes breed in there.
The other complaint is a full tank with no usable pressure, or a tank that runs dry mid summer and leaves the toilets and the washing machine with nothing. An unmaintained tank is the real risk, not the rainwater.
