Electric Tank Not Keeping Up Anymore?
Electric storage units fail predictably. The most common is a burnt-out heating element. In a twin-element tank, losing the lower one leaves only the top of the cylinder heating, so hot water vanishes halfway through the second shower.
Thermostats are the next offender. When one fails the unit either stops calling for heat or sticks on and cooks the tank until the safety cut-out trips. A tank tripping the breaker is telling you an element has gone to earth.
Then the slow killer: a spent anode. Once that sacrificial rod has corroded away, the steel cylinder starts rusting from the inside. You see discoloured water, then rumbling from sediment, then a leak at the base. At that point the tank is finished.

Get your electric hot water back quickly
We test before we replace: supply at the unit, both elements and thermostats, whether the off-peak circuit energises during its window, and the state of the anode. Half the electric jobs we attend are a failed element or thermostat, and we carry those.
Tariff catches people out too. A tank on off-peak only heats overnight, so if the household has grown you can run dry by mid-afternoon on a perfectly good tank. A boosted tariff or a bigger tank solves that.
